Alan Kopin, M.D.
Alan Kopin, MD is a Professor of Medicine Emeritus at Tufts University School of Medicine where he was a member of the Department of Neuroscience, and of the Pharmacology and Genetics programs. He is a board-certified internist / gastroenterologist. Dr. Kopin directed a molecular pharmacology research center at Tufts Medical Center for more than 25 years, mentoring more than 30 pre- and postdoctoral scientists. A major focus of his work was G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) as they relate to metabolic disease, pain, and neurological disorders. He has published more than 80 peer reviewed manuscripts.
In addition to his work in molecular pharmacology, he served as Chief Scientific Officer of a rare disease foundation for 3 years and was a committee member evaluating life science investment opportunities for a non-profit organization for more than a decade. He founded three biotechnology entities which grew out of his academic efforts, the first was acquired by Aventis Pharmaceuticals (now Sanofi), the second developed a drug currently in clinical trials, and the third is developing ASOs targeting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. He has been a consultant to several biotech and big pharma entities.
